New Development Laptop
Reply Quote
I'm looking to buy a new laptop that will be my main development workstation over the next 2-3 years. I'm currently using a Dell 600m Inspiron that has worked out well.  Several years ago I used a Thinkpad that was a great machine.  I also like the Toshiba laptops.

I'm not looking for an ultralight little laptop and I'm not looking for a giant multimedia laptop.  Trying to find something with a 14-15 inch screen with a 60G+ HD.  I want to start out with a 1 Gig of Ram and be able to upgrade to 2 Gigs in the near future.  I need to to have XP Pro and longer battery life (4+ hours).

I'm looking for any input that you have had on recent laptop purchases.  What kinds of laptops have been the most reliable?  Which companies have provided good service when there are problems?

Thanks,

Chris

I also am somewhat interested in picking up a Tablet PC.  I've seen decent Gateway and Toshiba Tablet models.  If you have any ideas about that I would be interested as well.

Like most people at Microsoft, I use a Toshiba Tecra M4.  It runs Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.   I think you can get this laptop for around $1,600.   I've used it for 3 months now and really like it.
Thanks!

IBM has great laptops.  The T43 should give you something a little faster than your 600m (depending on old vs new specs) and still be about the same size/weight.  I also have a 600m (1.8GHz) so I'm wonder what speed yours is that you looking for a new machine.  If you already have a decent speed CPU I'd recommend getting a little extra ram and weight until you can afford a dual core mobile solution.  I think IBM T series may have a dual core now but Dell only has the tank size laptop now.  I picked up a refurb XPS M140 for not much but will likely end up selling it and keeping my 600m.  Going to 1280x800 from 1400x1050 is not easy.

I vote IBM ;)

Thanks, I ended up getting a fully loaded Inspiron 6000 over Christmas which has worked out well.  I've heard really good feeback about the Toshiba tablets though, next one will will have to be a tablet.
